Dig out your poodle skirts, unpack your tie-dyed t-shirts or rock your favorite big hair band look for this year’s July 4 parade. The Wimberley Valley Chamber of Commerce announced last week that this year’s Independence Day parade will sport a “retro” theme highlighting the 1950s, ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s.
Titled “Blast from the Past,” floats decorated in a nostalgic style, classic cars, vintage costumes and other mid-century icons will vie for the “Most Creative Float,” the “Most Creative Truck,” the “Most Patriotic,” and the “Best Retro Theme” prize.
Participants can take inspiration from some 30-plus years of radical change. The aesthetics of sock hop, hip hop, beatnik, hippie, disco, rock, reggae, punk, metal and grunge are all up for grabs along with such technological icons of the era as transistor radios, color TVs, Pac-Man, PCs, cell phones, satellites and robots. Retro color schemes can also be used to call up a particular decade, such as pastels for the ‘50s, psychedelic hues for the ‘60s, earth tones for the ‘70s and bright colors with black and neon for the ‘80s.
This year’s July 4 parade falls on a Friday and begins at 10 a.m. Participants can register for the parade until Monday, June 30 by going to July 4 on the Events Calendar at Wimberley.org. Participants will also have the option of registering now for the Wishes for Wimberley Lighted Parade on November 30, for half off the entry fee.
The 2025 parade is presented by HEB Operation Appreciation as well as Champion Sponsor, the City of Wimberley.
Parade Spectators are encouraged to arrive early to secure a good spot along the parade route. Affected streets, including FM 2325 starting at Green Acres Rd. and RR 12 through downtown and ending at Blue Heron Run, will close at 9:30 a.m.
