Workshop to teach elements of healthy watersheds, grazinglands

An educational workshop to teach the components of a healthy watershed and well-managed grazinglands will take place in Wimberley on June 24. The Lone Star Healthy Streams workshop will include an in-depth discussion of small acreage conservation, as well as rainfall harvesting with on-site visuals. It will spotlight the Cypress Creek Watershed, exclusively in Hays County as well as other watersheds in the county.

Topics include rainwater harvesting, conservation strategies for small acreages, feral hogs in Hays County, local water quality, and best management practices for watersheds and grazinglands.

Featured speakers will be Leanne Wiley, Program Specialist for Lone Star Healthy Streams; Jonas Rosenthal, Hays Country Watershed Coordinator; Aaron McCoy, Hays County Agrilife Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent; John Smith, Extension Program Specialist; and Liz Tidwell, Extension Program Specialist in Small Acreage and Wildlife Management.

The half-day workshop is eligible for Continuing Education Units.

Offered by the Blanco- Cypress Watershed Protection Plan in collaboration with Hays County Parks and Natural Resources, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, and the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board, it is encouraged by the Cities of Wimberley and Woodcreek and Texas Master Naturalists.

The Lone Star Healthy Streams workshop will take place from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Wimberley Community Center, 14068 RR12. Registration begins at 8 a.m.

The free event is open to the public and will include light refreshments for attendees.
