Texans sweep Cuero for first Area championship since 2017

The Texans swept the Cuero Gobblers in a two-game series to capture the Area championship on Saturday.

Wimberley advances to the Regional Semifinals, having won their first Area playoff game since 2017.

On Thursday, the Texans hosted the Gobblers in the first game of the three-game series.

After the Gobblers scored first in the first inning, the Texans tied the game on an RBI double from Grace Strobel.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Texans took their first lead of the game. Facing runners on first and second, Reagan Kenley hit an RBI single into left field to put Wimberley up 2-1.

Cuero later took back the lead in the top of the fourth inning, scoring on an RBI ground out before scoring again on a wild pitch, going up 3-2.

But the Texans had an answer in the bottom of the fourth. With runners on second and third, Ella Patek smashed a three-run home run over the center field fence, giving the Texans a 5-3 lead.

Going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Texans added much needed insurance runs. Bailey Wright scored Emorie Gahan on a sacrifice fly in left field, extending the lead. Later in the at-bat, Strobel hit an RBI single as the Texans entered the top of the seventh up 7-3.

Cuero did not give up however, hitting a tworun home run to cut the lead. But the Texans got the outs they needed to seal the Game 1 victory at 7-5.

Friday night the Texans made the trip out to Cuero for Game 2 and had an opportunity to complete the sweep.

Wimberley once again struck first in their first at-bat. Patek hit an RBI single to put the Texans up before scoring on a Cuero error to give Wimberley a 2-0 lead.

Later in the fourth inning, the Texans added on to their lead in emphatic fashion. With runners on first and second, Julia Leonard crushed a three-run home run over the center field fence, putting Wimberley up 5-0 over Cuero.

Kenley added on to the Texans lead in the top of the fifth inning, hitting a sacrifice fly to score Gahan and put Wimberley up 6-0.

Once again the Gobblers did not go down without a fight. After scoring on a RBI single, the Gobblers hit a two-home run, cutting the Texans lead to 6-3. The Gobblers again hit a home run in the bot- tom of the sixth inning as Wimberley entered the seventh up 6-4.

However much like in Game 1, the Texans added much needed insurance runs.

Strobel started the inning with an RBI single before pinch runner Jewel Lock scored on another Cuero fielding error.

Leanna Therrien added on to the Texans’ lead, scoring a run on a sacrifice bunt as Wimberley led 9-4 going into the bottom of the seventh.

Again the Gobblers started to make their comeback. After scoring two runs on a Texans fielding error, the Gobblers scored again on an RBI single, cutting their lead down to 9-7. The second Texans error of the inning allowed Cuero to bring home another run as the Gobblers had the game tying run at third with two outs.

But despite all the defensive miscues in the seventh, Wimberley persevered. On a 3-2 count, pitcher Campbell caught the hard hit liner, sealing both the Texans 9-8 win and to bring home the Area championship.

Wimberley advances to the Regional Semifinals for the first time since 2017 where the Texans will meet the Zapata Hawks in a onegame playoff series.

The Hawks enter the Regional Semifinal game with a 12-171 overall record after placing in fourth place in district.

Much like Wimberley, despite their record the Hawks went on to win the Bi-District championship over Port Isabel, beating the Tarpon 15-0 in Game 1 then 18-0 in Game 2.

Last week in the Area round, Zapate lost Game 1 to Rockport- Fulton 6-4 before beating the Pirates 2-1 in Game 2. In the third and final game of the series, Zapata defeated Rockport-Fulton 9-5 to win the Area championship.

First pitch for Wimberley- Zapata is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Somerset High School.
