I had high hopes for this squirrel-proof bird feeder. It had positive reviews and quite a few were sold. I already had two bird feeders but the birds rarely got the seeds because the squirrels got there first. You would think that the squirrels would be getting too fat to eat so many seeds, but if some were, they signaled the rest of their friends to come feast at my feeders.
My new squirrel- proof bird feeder lasted three days before the squirrels figured out how to eat from it. So, yes, you can teach old squirrels new tricks.
I looked for ideas to make my squirrel-proof bird feeder actually squirrel proof. I found a metal plate to put over the bird feeder for $30. Not willing to spend that amount of money, I bought a disposable pie pan to do the same job. That was another three-day success.
On the fourth day, I found the feeder on the ground with the aluminum pie pan tossed away in disgust, I assume by an unhappy squirrel.
Next, I decided to put vaseline all over the pie plate and re-attach it to the squirrel-proof bird feeder. So, instead of climbing down the tree to reach the vaseline-coated aluminum pie pan covering the feeder, the squirrels jumped from the ground to the bottom of the feeder. I could almost see a smirk on those little devil’s faces as they happily munched on the seeds.
I am not giving up.
It is not that I don’t feed the squirrels, as I always spread some seed on the ground for them. I just want seed in my bird feeders for the birds. The birds in my neighborhood are tweeting me on!
I found another squirrel-proof bird feeder online with even better positive reviews. I have one on order, I just wonder how many educated squirrels have written those reviews? I read that the last things to survive on earth will be cockroaches. I believe the squirrels will be right beside them.
