Coach Warren to retire after 36 years

After a 36-year coaching career including being the head coach of the Wimberley Texans for 11 years, Doug Warren announced his retirement Tuesday morning.

The news was first reported by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine.

“I am most proud of the development of all of our athletic programs across the board,” Warren said in an official statement. “When I took the job, I had a vision for Wimberley to be the best athletic program in the state of Texas and in my eyes, we are. It has just been an incredible journey filled with great memories and lasting friendships.

“The coaches at Wimberley ISD are the absolute best and I can’t thank them enough for their commitment and dedication to the student athletes at Wimberley. The support from our administration and parents is second to none as well. You have to have all three of those components to be successful and we have that here.”

Warren took over the Texan program in 2013 following previous Head Coach Weldon Nelms. In his 11 seasons at Wimberley, Warren finished with an 119-47 overall record and never missed the postseason.

From 2016 to 2024, the Texans won ten or games in seven of the eight seasons along with reaching the state championship game in 2019 and 2022. In the last three seasons, the Texans have qualified for the state semifinals, a program first.
