All dogs and cats have their quirks. Some are cute and some are head-scratching. I now have four rescue dogs, so I call my home “The House of Quirks.”
For example, three of my dogs will only eat out of specific bowls, and the color of the bowls matter. If I accidentally give them the wrong bowl, they sniff and walk away until I get it right. The fourth dog will eat her food from any bowl, as long as it is placed in her bed. I guess she was spoiled with breakfast in bed at her previous home or she wants me to believe that.
I purchased a puppy mat for my front entrance to catch the dirt from my dog’s paws when they come in. All of the dogs have figured out a way to avoid stepping on the mat, even if they have to hop on one foot to get around it. I am the only one who uses the doggy mat.
Somehow, the dogs have learned to count and I have never left a math book near them. I usually toss three small treats to them. If I only toss two, they stare into my eyes and then down on the floor in front of them. They will do this over and over until I finally get the idea and toss them one more.
Not only can they count, but I think they’ve taught each other how to tell time. Even though we recently turned our clocks ahead, they still look at the clock at 5 p.m. and stare at me with sad eyes. I try to explain to them that it is really only 4 p.m. but I have found that trying to explain anything to them is useless. They just don’t listen.
So I ignore them for five minutes at a time before I give them their dinner. We have now progressed to 5:30 p.m., which used to be 4:30 p.m. They all sigh on their way to their specific bowls. I’m thinking of covering my clock the next time the time changes.
